The Florence Unified School District governing board voted unanimously to adopt the district's fiscal year 2027 expenditure budget following a public hearing and staff presentation.
Mister Cruz presented the adoption packet, saying the official adoption mirrors the proposed budget the board reviewed in June. "The adoption so this is the official, adoption for the fiscal 27 year budget. It is the exact same proposal as we had in the proposed budget in June," he said. Cruz told the board the proposal includes an $1,800,000 energy-savings rebate from the IRS that "arrived and was cashed at the treasurer." He also said preliminary carry-forward amounts are "sitting at about 900,000" but could grow as the business office closes the prior fiscal year.
Why it matters: the budget sets the district's spending priorities for the coming year and includes one-time and recurring adjustments staff said are intended to reflect conservative enrollment projections. Cruz told trustees an August budget revision will incorporate updated enrollment numbers and final state budget forms; he said the district prefers to increase budget capacity in August if numbers allow rather than reduce spending midyear. He also noted the district's incoming chief financial officer, Jennifer Tagaban, will adopt the most current final budget forms at that time.
Trustees moved and approved the budget during new business. The motion to adopt the FY27 expenditure budget was made by Miss Quist; the transcript records the motion being seconded and the board voting in favor, recorded as "motion carries 3 0." Board members recorded on the vote sheet in the transcript were Mister Beatty, Miss Jones, Miss Quist and Miss Wiegand, with the meeting record showing a 3-0 carry.
The board did not request additional changes during the hearing. The district expects to post an August revision after enrollment figures and final state forms are available.
The meeting then moved on to other business.
