State appropriation, USTA support will put new courts on city property with planned August opening

Councilors reviewed plans for tennis courts funded through a state appropriations grant that — because of grant rules — will be administered through the school board and placed on city property so the entire community can use them. City Clerk (S1) explained the restriction: the funding could not go directly to the high school and must be routed through the school board and then assigned to city property for community access.
S1 said the United States Tennis Association is contributing part of the funds and the city will add lines for pickleball and other uses to broaden community benefit. Staff discussed access controls — options include a key-checkout system, cameras, or a partially locked layout with scheduled public and school access. The clerk said construction is still about six to eight weeks out and the council is aiming for an August opening and grand-opening event.
Council asked recreation staff to explore summer camp and tournament programming that could generate revenue to support court maintenance.
