Vernon officials say budget needs roughly $70,000 in cuts; sales-tax option discussed

City Clerk (S1) told the Vernon council the administration expects to need about $70,000 in reductions to the working budget to meet state filing requirements and stabilize finances. “I think we need to cut around $70,000 to help get it,” S1 said, and added that the city’s current property-appraiser estimate for taxable value was about $32,700,000.
Council members discussed revenue options. Several said pursuing the county’s discretionary sales tax or seeking a county-administered option could generate additional revenue, but Council member (S7) reminded the council that any municipal discretionary sales tax must run through the county. Council members asked staff to analyze the feasibility and costs, including whether a mail-ballot referendum would reduce the expense of placing measures before voters.
The clerk also reviewed anticipated county quarterly payments for the fire department and ongoing uncertainties about insurance and utility costs. Council scheduled follow-up budget workshops and asked staff for detailed line-item options to meet the $70,000 target before the next meeting.
