Romeoville moves forward on Ward parcel park design, OSLAD grant application and trail extensions

Village staff sought and received approval to advance several park projects and grant applications during the July 15 meeting.
Christy asked the board to accept a White and Company proposal to provide Phase 1 schematic design, engineering and assistance on an OSLAD grant application for the Ward parcel. Phase 1 would include a pavilion, parking, raised community garden beds, walking paths, native planting areas, outdoor fitness stations and stormwater management improvements; staff said they plan to reuse salvage material from an old barn and to install a historical marker. Christy said land acquisition was previously funded through a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant of $478,000 and an additional $100,000 DCEO grant secured via Senator Ventura’s office.
On the OSLAD grant, Christy said the village will apply to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for up to $600,000 and that the program requires a 50% local match; applications are due Aug. 31.
Staff also requested design and engineering services from Robinson Engineering for Phase 4 of Rome Crossing Community Park, a roughly 0.72‑mile trail extension that will include a portion across leased Diocese of Joliet property; staff said they will return with construction estimates after the design is complete. Separately, approval was requested to purchase playground equipment from BCI Burke for Westglenn Park, with a $100,000 contribution from Lockport Township Park District and $250,000 from a DCEO grant secured through Senator Capelle’s office.
Trustees expressed support for connecting the Ward parcel to Volunteer Park and praised the design elements. The park project proposals and the playground purchase were included on the consent agenda and approved.
