Romeoville updates municipal code: administrative warnings, cannabis limits and police dog retirement

The Village of Romeoville considered several ordinance updates during the July 15 meeting intended to align local code with state law and expand non‑court enforcement options.
Mister Vogel presented ordinance 26‑20‑71 to add about 10 ordinance violations to the administrative warning ticket (AWT) process so officers can resolve minor violations without court proceedings. "One of those that the police like to resort to...is the use of a...administrative warning ticket," Vogel said, explaining AWTs can be a lower‑intensity enforcement tool that, in some cases, includes a small fine that can be paid to avoid court.
Vogel also presented ordinance 26‑20‑73 to mirror a recent state change that increased cannabis possession limits and distinguishes resident and nonresident thresholds. "Essentially, what this ordinance does, it tracks the state law that got adopted last month," he said, to ensure village enforcement aligns with state limits.
On ordinance 26‑20‑74, Vogel explained the Police Dog Retirement Act will apply to Lola, the department’s comfort/wellness dog, noting Lola will retire and be placed with records clerk Debbie Becker, who retires at the end of the month. "She's actually also retiring at the end of this month, and so they're gonna be able to enjoy a bright and relaxing and work free future moving forward," Vogel said.
