The board heard a superintendent report on July 14 that detailed changes to communications and a plan for outreach and community engagement, and members discussed several policy ideas including a suggested resolution for stronger vetting of board members.
The superintendent said the district website has been optimized for mobile viewing and that updates — including a welcome letter and summer guidance-office schedules — would appear on the site. She said parents and students can expect high-school and middle-school schedules to be available by Aug. 1 and outlined plans for a short video series and additional meet-and-greets in August. "I appreciate all the time that I've spent with everyone," the superintendent said as she described the communications plans and upcoming events.
Board members asked about the timing for publishing the district calendar and athletic events feed; administrators agreed to follow up and confirm dates for an RSS or events feed so the district calendar will show athletic schedules and other events. The emergency plan was also flagged for review; the superintendent said the state requires a district emergency plan and that the plan will be posted to the website once approved.
Separately, a board member proposed drafting a resolution to the New York State organization referenced in the transcript (NISPA) to raise the issue of more robust vetting — including fingerprinting — for board members in the wake of a referenced situation. The proponent said the idea could be framed as a resolution to put the issue on NISPA's radar or to advocate for legislation; other members cautioned that such a requirement may need to come from the state and that substitutions or funding implications would have to be considered. The discussion remained at the exploratory stage; no motion to draft or send a resolution was recorded.
A member who completed an eight-hour mental-health first-aid training encouraged the board to consider offering similar staff development in the fall, and volunteered to share training materials and a flyer. Members welcomed the suggestion and asked administrators to coordinate follow-up.
Board members also discussed selecting two student board representatives this year (two seniors), with a plan to move to a senior/junior pairing after this year; the policy committee will consider timing and language so selections can be approved in August/September.
The meeting then moved on to organizational votes and ultimately into an executive session to discuss employment histories; the public session did not resume based on the transcript excerpt.
