Council approves revised Heritage Park mural after debate over portraits

The town council approved a revised mural for Heritage Park after members debated whether the artwork should include portraits of local people.

Alma, a member of the mural committee, moved to accept the rendering with changes that remove human figures and place a Doctor Pepper bottle on the wagon. "I make a motion on the mural for the Heritage Park that we, take out people, put just a bottle of the Doctor Pepper bottle on the wagon somewhere," Alma said. A staff member seconded the motion and the chair called for a voice vote; the chair then declared the motion approved after members answered "aye."

Supporters of the revision said the change would preserve the mural’s celebratory elements while reducing controversy. A council member who helped lead the project argued the mural is a modest investment and an important visible sign of the park revitalization: "It's going to be the first thing you see when you come over that hill to that park," the council member said, urging colleagues not to abandon the project.

Opponents had objected to the inclusion of identifiable people. One council member said the committee’s process appeared to change after the meeting and expressed frustration that elements were altered without broader input. The artist and others said some of the changes were suggestions rather than final decisions and that the committee’s original intent remained intact.

Council members discussed specific design elements before the vote: moving water towers back, adjusting the wagon placement and enlarging a pond so the mural better reflects the park setting. After the motion passed, council members urged the mural team to finalize the rendering and move forward with installation.

The council did not record any opposing votes on the motion during the meeting. The mural committee will proceed with the accepted changes and prepare the artwork for installation.
