Hickman reading center reports busiest June, expands tutoring and youth activities

Erin Stubin, volunteer director of the Hickman Area Reading, Technology and Historical Center, updated the council on April–June activity and summer programming. Stubin said the center has 637 patrons in its system (an increase of 21 since the last report) and nearly 6,200 items in inventory; June was the center’s busiest month on record.
The reading center has added a chess club (Thursdays at 2 p.m.) that draws 5–10 kids per week, tutoring with at least two teachers providing regular sessions, a knitting club meeting twice monthly, and collaboration events with the community playhouse for story time. Stubin said proceeds from book sales (current account balance about $4,100) are used to fund community programs and speakers.
Council asked about club schedules and future expansions; Stubin said staff are seeking more volunteers and would consider extending chess club time. Stubin announced a book sale during Hey Days on July 25 (8 a.m.–4 p.m.).
The council thanked Stubin for the report and asked staff to share more information about volunteer needs and program schedules.
