Dolores County moves ambulance authorization to April 4, discusses countywide emergency services council

Chair opened the meeting and said the board would move a formal authorization item for ambulance operations to the April 4 meeting so local ambulance providers and the newly arrived chief could attend and explain needs. "That way we could have a formal invite to our ambulances to come in because we've got a new chief," the Chair said.

Why it matters: County and emergency responders said a formal authorization and clearer county-level coordination will help preserve licensing, clarify mutual-aid relationships and strengthen grant applications. Board members agreed it was practical to postpone the formal vote until ambulance leaders could be present.

Keith, introduced at the meeting as a county responder, described how an Emergency Services Council would work: "It's just a better way to have those of us that respond in Dolores County to make sure that we're all on the same page," Keith said, adding that a council could provide unified letters of support for grant applications and resolve small operational problems before they become larger ones.

County staff noted the ambulance needs to submit a renewal request online to the state (through the health licensing process) to preserve exclusive authorization; the Chair agreed a county resolution or vote at the April 4 meeting would be sufficient to support that renewal. "Once it's approved, it's just an online thing that I do through CDPHE and CHE," Keith said, describing the licensing submission process.

The board directed staff to place an "authorization to operate" item on the April 4 agenda at 10:30 a.m., and encouraged ambulance leadership to request the county's supporting letter promptly so the licensing paperwork could meet late-June deadlines.
