The Shawnee County commission on Jan. 2 acknowledged an Administrative Review Committee report and set a public hearing on a proposed tax exemption for Research Fine Foods Inc.
Ashley Beegart of the county councilor’s office said the company applied to expand its salad plant at 3728 Southeast 6th Street in Topeka by about 90,000 square feet with the tax exemption proposed to begin in tax year 2027. The committee recommended a 10‑year, 100% tax exemption contingent on the applicant’s commitments. Beegart said Research Fine Foods committed to hiring at least 30 new employees in the first three years of the exemption and would be required to maintain those 30 positions throughout the 10‑year period.
The board voted to acknowledge the committee’s report and set a public hearing for Feb. 12, 2026, to accommodate publication requirements. The motion passed 3-0.
Next steps: the public hearing will provide an opportunity for public comment and for the commission to consider whether to approve the exemption request after required notices and review.
