Shawnee County commissioners unanimously approved a three‑year memorandum of understanding with the local AFSCME bargaining unit on Jan. 2.
Angela Lewis, director of administrative services, presented contract C2026011 and introduced union representatives Jennifer Smith and Gary Workman. Lewis said the agreement covers solid waste employees and includes a 3% wage increase for 2026, 2027 and 2028, a $250 annual allowance for purchase of shoes (a $100 increase over the prior contract), and a $1,000 safety bonus paid in two $500 installments covering January–June and July–December for employees who go without a reportable injury or accident.
Gary Workman, chapter chair, thanked HR and said, “Everything we asked for, we got,” noting the boot allowance and safety bonus. The board moved to approve the contract and voted 3-0 in favor.
The contract is effective for the three‑year term covered by C2026011. Commissioners thanked negotiation team members and county staff for reaching the agreement.
