Board approves crosswalk painting after member’s amendment fails

The Brookline Transportation Board approved a three‑item consent agenda at its July 15 meeting that included new crosswalk markings at multiple intersections and the approval of two sets of meeting minutes.
Board member Nancy moved to amend the crosswalk item to exclude the proposed double crosswalks at Ivy & Carlton and Houston & Carlton. Nancy said she opposed the additional crosswalks at those locations and argued "I don't think you need more than 1 crosswalk at the intersection" because of traffic backups on Carlton during peak hours. Her motion did not receive a second and therefore died.
After the failed amendment, another member moved to approve the consent agenda as written by staff. The board approved the consent items on a roll‑call vote.
During public comment earlier in the meeting, Sean Lynn Jones, president of the Brookline Green Space Alliance and a town meeting member, raised a separate neighborhood concern: two‑hour parking signs on Monmouth Street and Monmouth Court had disappeared. Jones asked when signs would be replaced; staff replied that a work order is in place to replace the missing signs.
The approved crosswalks are part of a larger maintenance and paving program staff presented to the board in the meeting’s CIP discussion; staff said pavement and ADA ramp upgrades are being coordinated with the striping work so that crossings are fully established when paving is complete. The board did not alter the staff‑recommended list after discussion.
