SEDAN, Kan. — The Sedan City Council voted Aug. 6 to buy a new lift-station pump and to replace worn tires on a sewer maintenance vehicle after staff reported equipment failures and corrosion.
Mayor Bryan Blankinship presided over the meeting, during which Public Works-related updates dominated early business. Jim Miller told the council a tire blew on the sewer machine and three others were in poor condition; the council approved buying three tires at $103.63 each. Miller also said the lift station at the fairgrounds has been rebuilt twice and is rusting. The city received two bids: HFE Industries quoted $53,627 for the pump (installation not included but a technician will supervise), and Smith & Loveless quoted roughly $100,631 including removal and installation. The council approved purchasing the HFE pump; Miller will keep the old pump for parts.
Miller also noted the city ordered $730 in parts to repair a lift station, a purchase the mayor approved because the station cannot be left inoperable. The council recorded motions and seconders for the tire purchase and the HFE purchase; both motions carried.
Miller raised a longstanding safety issue at a culvert near the pool where vehicles back into a ditch; he said he opposes installing a guardrail because drivers have historically backed into the ditch and a rail could create additional collisions. That exchange was discussed but produced no formal action.
What’s next: With the HFE pump approved, staff will arrange installation and retain the old unit for parts. The council discussed sign and grant items later in the meeting; separate votes covered those topics.
