Avon reports modest enrollment dip, continuing open-enrollment applications and low Avon Online sign-ups

Mrs. Allday presented the district’s enrollment snapshot, telling the board that total enrollment at the reporting date was 10,415 students, a decline of 39 from the same date the previous year (10,454). She said kindergarten enrollment was a notable area of focus — down from 645 last year to 622 at the time of reporting — and that kindergarten remains the grade with the most open-enrollment activity.

Allday said the district had received 119 nonresident applications this cycle, with 65 students enrolled so far (up six from the prior year). She reminded the board that open enrollment is ongoing through January unless a cap is reached at a particular grade; the district may delay start dates for late enrollments (for example, accepting a high-school applicant for second semester rather than starting mid-year).

On Avon Online (the district’s virtual program) she reported 17 students enrolled so far and said staffing for remote offerings has been adjusted: one teacher position was shifted to a halftime role shared between Avon Online and the high school. Board members asked whether new Avon Online registrants were returning Avon families and asked the administration to track whether virtual enrollees originated with Avon students who had left the district in recent years.

The board also discussed Avon Academy (an alternative program): administrators said the academy’s practical capacity is approximately 85 students given staffing and state rules limiting alternative-class size. The enrollment report will be updated as school begins and staff continue to collect more granular transfer and origin data.

The board received the report and had no separate motion on enrollment beyond the consent approvals earlier in the meeting.
