Resident reports high water bill and sidewalk damage; council tables Environmental Code update

SEDAN, Sept. 3, 2024 — During the public-comment portion of the Sedan City Council meeting, resident Robbie Hambleton reported an unexpectedly high water bill and said an exterior inspection turned up a possible leak near an old water meter. City employee Jim Miller said the meter likely needs to be moved to the front of the residence and offered to visit the property to help locate the leak in case it is a city-related issue.
Another resident, Irvin Hann, reported that a sidewalk north of his residence is torn and asked whether Appleby funds remain available for local repairs. Hann also suggested the city consider purchasing a meter leak checker, estimating the device costs about $1,300.
City staffer Lana Robinson told the council that gas companies have been installing above-ground gas regulators that she described as an "eyesore" and that she will contact the gas company about making them more aesthetically pleasing. Robinson also reported she had spoken with Cameron Williams about a dock grant; Williams will order materials to begin dock work.
Chief Kirk Richardson spoke about Ordinance No. 948, the Environmental Code, saying it requires cleanup and updates; Richardson and Robinson will work together on revisions. Councilmember Adam Clark moved to table the Environmental Code until the next meeting; Angela Evans seconded and the motion carried.
Mayor Bryan Blankinship said he will begin a new job on Monday and may need to move future meetings to a later time. The meeting adjourned at 5:48 p.m.
