The Mebane City Council approved a construction contract for the GKN pump-station force-main replacement project after staff recommended awarding the work to North State Water and Sewer.
Public Works staff explained the project will replace a 6-inch cast-iron force main with a 10-inch ductile-iron main to raise the GKN station’s capacity. "This project will take us from about a 187,000 gallons a day ability at the GKN existing pump station to 288,000 gallons a day," project staff said, and noted the replacement also supports flow increases needed by the upcoming Kory Mixed Use Development and other outparcels.
Staff reported North State Water and Sewer was the low base bidder. In the presentation staff said the low base bid was $717,700 and recommended a project budget of $900,000; the motion to award the contract, as entered into the meeting record, referenced an award amount of $1,717,000. The transcript records both figures; council approved the award by motion and voice vote.
Franz Hope, the presenting project staff member, said the budget includes contingencies and that the work is expected to advance additional pump-station upgrades (Fieldstone pump station) later as part of a multi-project program.
