Library to host rotating history exhibits; musket dated to 1791 on display, Sept. 6 Groton Heights commemoration planned

The Groton Public Library announced upcoming rotating exhibits and local-history programming, and staff described a recently received family heirloom that will be displayed in the library's local-history room.

Staff said the library currently houses a Declaration of Independence exhibit and will host the nationwide "American Experience" exhibit (sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution, Abigail Hinman chapter) the week of Aug. 9; DAR members will be on-site during the week for hands-on activities.

A family loan of a musket that was offered for display underwent internal research. The staff member reported that museum research dated the musket to about 1791 and that it likely saw later-era service around the War of 1812 rather than the earlier 1781 battle often associated with Groton Heights. "Apparently, on the musket itself, it is not Battle of [Fort Griswold]; it was created in 1791," the staff member said.

Separately, staff announced the town's commemoration of the Battle of Groton Heights will be held Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. at the fort and will include candle lighting, color guard, hymns, taps and brief remarks by the mayor. The staff member said the governor has been invited and that, according to the staff member, the governor is a descendant of a defender; staff reported outreach to state contacts to confirm attendance.

The library plans to publicize the exhibits and the musket's updated history in its newsletter and social channels; staff will coordinate with town offices about distributing printed materials for Granite City Day and other events.
