Parks committee sends dog-station proposal and signage questions to finance

The Parks and Recreation Committee voted to refer a proposal to install dog-waste stations and resolve park signage questions to the city’s finance committee for budget consideration.

Staff raised the idea of installing dog-waste stations at parks and estimated a per-unit budget line around $1,000, saying the committee should work with public works (Trent) on siting and installation. Committee members debated whether dogs should be allowed year-round or limited to periods when school is not in session and whether signs should restrict animals on ball fields, which are used by children.

Committee member (S2) said the devices could be a combined trash receptacle with dog-bag dispensers or a simpler can with a bag roll, and asked staff to provide product options. The committee asked staff (Ava) to research whether a city ordinance already bars dogs in parks or on playing fields.

Staff member (SEG 176) made a motion to move the matter to the finance committee for budget review; the committee agreed to forward the proposal and to include public works in follow-up planning. The referral is expected to be considered at the finance committee meeting in early August (finance meeting scheduling was discussed by the committee during the meeting).

Why it matters: The committee’s referral will determine whether money is allocated to purchase and install dog-waste stations and whether new or clarified signage will constrain pet access to certain park areas, affecting how residents use city parks.
