Groton library reports strong summer-reading turnout; invite-only finale with ice cream set for Aug. 21

The Groton Public Library reported robust participation in its summer-reading program and a string of successful events that library staff say helped drive registration.
A staff member told the board that the library pursued a weeklong kickoff rather than a single opening event, a change she said led to higher turnout. "So far, our prereaders, we have approximately a 188 registered. Our intermediate readers, we have 225 registered. Teens is 48 and adults is a 169," the staff member reported to the board.
The staff member said programming included a high‑attendance performance by Poppy's Planet, an "adopt a reading buddy" event that drew more than 180 participants and a story time that involved teen volunteers. She said the staggered kickoff offered more opportunities for families who could not attend a single-day event.
To encourage completion and collect participation data, the library plans an invite-only summer-reading finale on Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. featuring a visit from Ice Cream Emergency, a mobile vendor the staff member described as an "old fashioned" ice cream parlor-on-wheels. "We're doing something a little bit different for this too... it is by invite only. We're trying this out. We'll see how it works," she said.
The staff member also highlighted related services and supports that helped sustain engagement: an additional children's-room service point installed June 22 to improve on-floor coverage, expanded "library of things" offerings and more user-focused social media clips.
Board members did not oppose moving forward with the events; no formal vote was required for the program planning details. The board will receive further updates as the library tracks completion and attendance figures following the finale.
