USD 237 approves KASB policy updates, defers AI-use policy for further review
Summary

The Unified School District 237 Board of Education on Jan. 12 voted 7–0 to adopt updates recommended by the Kansas Association of School Boards, while deferring action on policy IIBE (Use of Artificial Intelligence) for further review.
Superintendent Dustin McEwen reviewed the proposed KASB revisions and specifically recommended postponing approval of IIBE to allow additional time for board and staff consideration. Board member Adam Rentschler moved to approve the package with the exception of IIBE; Joe Wiehl seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
The board did not provide details of the proposed IIBE language in the minutes; members indicated they want more time to consider the implications of adopting an AI-use policy in district handbooks.
Next steps: staff will continue review of proposed IIBE language and present recommended language or options to the board at a future meeting.
