Smith Center council approves repairs, accepts donations and notes transportation grant award
Summary
At its June 8 meeting, the Smith Center City Council approved several maintenance contracts and vehicle repairs, agreed to accept a donated lot pending a title search, authorized a lot auction, approved a park bench donation, denied a private equipment request, accepted a staff retirement and learned it had been awarded a Public Transportation grant.
The Smith Center City Council on June 8 approved multiple routine contracts and administrative actions, directed staff to pursue a property title search and accepted the award of a transportation grant.
During new business resident Tiffany Rietzke told the council she had purchased the old pioneer building and asked whether the city would sell the lot behind that property; resident Ryan Rietzke asked that the city remove a city-owned electrical connection from the newly purchased building. Council members indicated they would proceed with selling the lot and work to resolve the electricity connection issue with the Rietzkes.
Clerk Brittany Niles presented a potential donation from Jay Lyon of an empty lot; the council directed staff to complete a title search and to accept the donation if the title is clear. Niles also reported that a city employee had expressed interest in buying an empty city lot; the council reached consensus to advertise that lot for bids or auction and to award it to the highest bidder.
The council approved two bids from Shellito Roofing: $700 to replace skylights at the city shop and $1,199.83 to replace bathroom skylights at the park. It also approved vehicle repairs from Mace Body Shop — $1,904.21 to repair the city’s Chevy Tahoe and $1,563.66 to repair a GMC — on motions by Councilmember Chris Cole with seconds as recorded in the minutes.
A bench donation for the city park was accepted after discussion with Public Works Supervisor Rick Hileman; Niles will coordinate the donation process. The council denied a request from Brett Decker to use city equipment and staff to clean a privately owned property and advised him to hire a private contractor.
Clerk Niles told the council the city had been awarded a grant for the upcoming Public Transportation fiscal year; the minutes record that the grant was awarded to the City of Smith Center but do not specify an award amount. The council accepted a retirement resignation from Marc Reilley and thanked him for his service. Treasurer Melissa Colby reported that representatives from Edmonds Gov., the financial software vendor under consideration, will attend the next meeting via Zoom.
A motion to adjourn, made by Chris Cole and seconded by Don Wick, carried and the meeting ended at 7:11 p.m.
