USD 237 board holds multiple executive sessions on personnel, negotiations and student matters

At the June 9 USD 237 Board of Education meeting the board moved into multiple executive sessions under the Kansas Open Meetings Act (KOMA) exceptions covering personnel, employer‑employee negotiations and confidential student information.

A personnel executive session began at 8:07 p.m. and the board returned to open session at 8:17 p.m.; after that session the board approved a contract for Jessica Abbott as Director of Food Service. The board later held one or more executive sessions to discuss upcoming negotiations (motions noted at about 8:19 p.m. and 8:34 p.m.) and entered executive session twice to address confidential student matters beginning at 8:46 p.m. and 9:01 p.m.; the minutes record staff leaving and returning from the closed meetings as required by KOMA procedures. Each motion to enter a closed session was approved by a 7‑0 vote and no public votes were recorded during the closed sessions themselves.

The minutes identify the legal basis for the closed meetings as the non‑elected personnel exception, the employer‑employee negotiations exception and the exception relating to actions adversely or favorably affecting a student under KOMA. The record shows no formal board action taken inside the closed sessions beyond the later public approval of the Director of Food Service contract.
