USD 237 board approves student accident insurance, nursing contract and staff hires

Superintendent Dustin McEwen told the board that the district’s student accident insurance rates with the Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB) remain unchanged from the prior year. Board member Adam Rentschler moved to continue the KASB student accident insurance for the 2025–26 school year; Board member Steve Overmiller seconded and the motion passed 7‑0.
The board also approved a contract with the Smith County Health Department to provide school nursing services for four hours per day. McEwen said the health department will handle hearing and vision screenings, schedule dental screenings and assume responsibility for AED machines. Rentschler moved to approve the contract; Jodi Frydendall seconded and the motion passed 7‑0.
Other personnel and program approvals included the board’s consent‑agenda bundle (minutes, monthly statements, donations, a resignation from bus driver Richard Bryan, salary‑schedule moves for Darian Baumann and Alex Hobelmann, elementary fundraiser approval and multiple requests for high‑school teams to use district vehicles for summer events). Steve Overmiller moved to approve the listed consensus items; Jodi Frydendall seconded and the motion passed 7‑0.
The board approved Javenia Stansbury as high‑school cheer sponsor for 2025–26 (motion by Libby McDonald; second by Adam Rentschler) and, after an executive session on personnel, approved a contract for Jessica Abbott as Director of Food Service for the 2025–26 school year (motion by Adam Rentschler; second by Libby McDonald). Both motions passed 7‑0.
In reports, district officials flagged rising benefit costs: Libby McDonald noted a 5.9% Blue Cross Blue Shield increase reported by the NCKSEC interlocal, while Superintendent McEwen reported a 20% BCBS increase for the district’s coverage going into 2025–26. McEwen also noted a pre‑construction meeting for roof work and that the district received a final quote for Reveal Math materials for the Jr./Sr. high school.
The board took no action on the previously scheduled coin‑drive item after it was removed from the agenda at the start of the meeting. The meeting adjourned at 9:16 p.m.
