Smith Center to buy new backhoe; old unit to be auctioned

Staff member Josh Niles presented the final price for a new backhoe from Foley Implement at the Feb. 23 meeting; Council President Chris Cole said the city intends to list the old backhoe and other surplus items for auction in spring.
A separate bid to replace the north door of the golf-course clubhouse was presented to the council. Cole said the purchase does not require council approval and that the golf-course board should approve the steel-door purchase.
The council did not vote on the backhoe purchase during the meeting beyond acceptance of the presented price; staff will proceed with procurement steps and prepare surplus items for auction.
