Smith Center police schedule scooter safety course, consider helmet ordinance amid vehicle recalls

Police Chief Jamie Marshall updated the council on Feb. 23 that the department is working to resolve three recalls on a 2013 Dodge Charger and that the Tahoe remains under repair.
Marshall said the department is working with local schools to schedule a scooter-safety course at the grade school and junior high. Council discussion included public complaints about minibikes—noise, risky stunts and unsafe operation—and Marshall said he would speak with the riders.
Council Member Ty Wallgren and staff member Josh Niles raised the possibility of adopting a local helmet ordinance; City Clerk Brittany Niles agreed to gather helmet-ordinance examples from other cities and present them at the council's next meeting for consideration. No ordinance or enforcement changes were adopted at the Feb. 23 meeting.
