Smith Center council approves two grants, ups Chamber funding

Scott Roth, representing the Economic Development Board, presented two grant awards at the Feb. 23 meeting that the council approved.
The council approved a $2,500 Residential Cleanup grant for Shawn Stansbury of 216 N. Grant and a $5,000 Commercial Property Revitalization grant for Julie Kuhlmann at 127 S. Main. Both motions passed after council discussion and a second.
Roth told the council that the Economic Development Board agreed to contribute an additional $2,000 toward a Chamber of Commerce funding request; by motion of Don Wick, seconded by Tracy Kingsbury, the council approved increasing the city's contribution to $16,000, supplemented by the board's $2,000 for a combined increase of $3,000 over prior years. The motions carried without recorded roll-call tallies at the meeting.
Council members said the grants are intended to support property cleanup and commercial revitalization efforts in downtown Smith Center. Staff will finalize award paperwork with the applicants.
