USD 438 Board approves $107,000 parking-lot lighting bid, drops preschool fees for 2024–25

The Board of Education of U.S.D. 438 on Aug. 12 approved a $107,000 bid from ECK Electric to install new parking-lot lighting, voted to eliminate preschool fees for the 2024–25 school year and ratified the district’s 2024–25 teacher contract.
Vice President Nicole Curtis called the regular meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. After an amendment to add drop-off/pickup procedures to the agenda, the board approved the revised agenda. Matt Ward, branch manager for ECK Electric, presented the company’s bid and recommended completing the lighting work in one phase; trustees approved the bid on a motion by Jerry DeWeese, seconded by Mark Graber (motion carried).
In other business, the board voted to remove preschool fees for 2024–25 after a motion from Jerry DeWeese, seconded by David McComb. The board also approved the district’s unpaid meal charge policy as presented (motion by David McComb; seconded by Allen Smith) and ratified the 2024–25 teacher contract with SNEA (motion by Allen Smith; seconded by Jerry DeWeese). The meeting record notes “motion carried” for these actions; no roll-call tallies were provided in the minutes.
The board accepted the resignation of Stacey Fisher as middle school assistant girls basketball coach and approved several supplemental contracts for the 2024–25 school year: Chris Sanders (sound system manager); Daniel Hacker and Jalen Basart (assistant high school football coaches); Cade Perez (middle school boys assistant basketball coach); and Sam Fisher (middle school assistant track coach).
Administrators and staff said families will receive a map explaining new drop-off and pick-up procedures (students park in the front lot; staff park on the east side and in a west gravel lot; curb space is for drop-off/pickup only). The board was also reminded that the Revenue Neutral hearing and the budget hearing are scheduled before the Sept. 9, 2024 regular meeting.
