Smith Center student presents Buddy Bench proposal to USD 237 board

Khloe Padilla, a Smith Center student and FCCLA participant, presented a Buddy Bench concept to the USD 237 Board of Education during the Jan. 13 meeting. Padilla described a playground bench that would serve as a signal for students who feel left out or are having a bad day; paired classroom lessons would teach peers how to recognize and support classmates.
Padilla said she is seeking donations to fund the bench and accompanying educational materials. Teacher Amy Terrill accompanied Padilla to the meeting; both left at 7:12 p.m. There was no formal board vote recorded on the Buddy Bench during the meeting minutes.
The proposal would place the bench on the elementary playground and include student-facing lessons to help peers practice supportive behaviors. Padilla’s presentation was recorded under the FCCLA Star Event item on the agenda; the board acknowledged the presentation in the minutes but did not record a motion to fund or adopt the project during this meeting.
