Smith Center police propose 'Safety Bucks' program, schedule scooter safety course at grade school

Police representative Marshall said Officer Joshua Niles completed his training hours while other officers still have training to finish. The department confirmed a scooter safety course is scheduled for April 29 at the grade school; Councilman Chris Cole asked staff to contact the high school to provide a junior high class as well.
Officer Joshua Niles proposed a 'Smith Center Safety Bucks' program in which officers would hand out paper 'bucks' to children observed wearing helmets or demonstrating active safety measures; the bucks would be redeemable at the city office for prizes or gift cards. The council agreed for Officer Niles to begin developing the program.
No ordinance or budget appropriation was recorded for the program at the meeting; the police department will return with further details if additional resources or formal approval are required.
