USD 237 board approves replacement of football field lights; Hubbard Foundation donation will fund project

The USD 237 Board of Education voted unanimously to accept a proposal from Hellas to replace the lights at the Smith Center football field and to contract TK Electric to install the secondary electrical distribution system. Superintendent Dustin McEwen recommended the award, saying Hellas raised the equipment warranty to 25 years while excluding damage from lightning, hail, power issues, misuse and vandalism. The board approved the motion, made by Adam Rentschler and seconded by Joe Wiehl, by a 7-0 vote.
McEwen told the board the district will use funds donated by the Hubbard Foundation to pay for the light replacement. He said Hellas submitted the bid through the Greenbush Cooperative Contract and that the vendor modified the contract in response to recommendations from the KASB attorney. The board set a project start date of June 1.
There were no public objections recorded in the meeting minutes. The board did not provide a dollar figure for the contract in the public record presented at the meeting; the source of funding was identified as the Hubbard Foundation donation. The board approved the contract in open session following discussion and recommended vendor review by counsel.
