The Smith Center City Council on March 9, 2026 approved a series of routine agenda items and personnel actions during a meeting that began at 6:00 p.m. at the Srader Building.
The council first approved the prior meeting’s minutes and the presented vouchers and receipts. It then approved renewal of Nex-tech services for security, backup and Microsoft 365 and accepted Nex-tech’s bid of $16,922.89 for a new server; council asked staff to research alternative server options for future purchases. The council also approved renewal of liability insurance for the airport.
Council granted the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks permission to survey along Spring Creek adjacent to the golf course and tabled consideration of the Kansas Underground Storage Tank Liability Plan until additional information is provided. Council approved hiring Alex Hobelmann as summer help at the golf course at a starting wage of $14.00 per hour.
On personnel and enforcement matters, the council voted to ban a transit rider who, according to the minutes, repeatedly disobeyed transit rules; the council directed a letter be hand-delivered to the rider by Chief Jamie Marshall. The council also approved a step increase for Joshua Niles—bumping him to step 7 on the approved wage scale—after noting Niles will reach the end of a six-month probation period.
The council approved a motion to move the second March meeting to Tuesday, March 31, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. The meeting was adjourned at 7:15 p.m.
