Canton council approves Georgia Power lighting agreement for South Canton Park; consent items and appointment also passed

The Canton City Council voted July 16, 2026 to approve a lighting service agreement with Georgia Power for South Canton Park. Staff member Penley told council the project calls for eight LED street poles (four along the road and four inside the park parking lot), a 400-foot underground trench and a required prepayment of $38,500; the agreement would run 24 months at $304.56 per month for service.

A council member moved to approve the lighting service agreement and to authorize the mayor to sign related documents; the motion carried by unanimous voice vote. Council had earlier approved a consent agenda that included a right-of-entry agreement with Georgia Power, an amendment to the school-safety-zone maps and a proposed Georgia Power underground easement for South Canton Park; the motion also authorized the mayor to execute related agreements.

Mayor nominated Josh Bagby to fill an open seat on the Downtown Development Authority; council seconded the nomination and unanimously approved the appointment for the remainder of the term. At the meeting’s close, council voted to adjourn into an executive session to discuss a real-estate matter.

The lighting agreement requires the underground easement to be executed before Georgia Power begins distribution construction; staff said the prepayment is a standard Georgia Power policy for upfront installation costs. Council took no separate vote on funding source in the record; staff indicated typical installation prepayments have precedents in prior park projects.
