St. Clair County commissioners voted April 28 to approve a TRIP 2 agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation for additional turn lanes on US‑231 (north of Road to just south of Johnson Drive) and separately approved a design and planning contract with GMC.
County Engineer Dan Dahlke told the board ALDOT’s share of the project is limited to $2,000,000; county and municipal partners (including Pell City) will need to provide an estimated combined local match of roughly $700,000 as plans are developed. Dahlke said several intersections near Coosa Valley School and nearby businesses create congestion and the turn-lane project aims to improve safety and traffic flow.
The commission then approved contracting GMC for engineering and bid-preparation services; Dahlke said GMC estimated $268,000 to develop plans and move the project to bidding. Both motions passed by voice vote; the ALDOT agreement and the GMC contract are subject to final plan development and funding tallies as the project proceeds.
The county will work with Pell City on local match details and bring refined numbers to future meetings.
