Following a public hearing, the St. Clair County Commission voted April 28 to authorize filing the FY2027 Section 5311 grant application with the Alabama Department of Transportation.
Janet Smith, director of Saint Clair County Public Transportation, described the program and said the administrative portion is funded at an 80/20 federal/local split, operations at 50/50, and vehicle capital at 80/20. She said the system operates roughly 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday–Friday, that passengers should schedule rides at least 24 hours in advance, and that current fares are $2 per 5 miles plus $1 for each additional stop.
The board closed the required public hearing before taking the vote. Commissioners noted that any personnel changes included in the proposed grant budget remain subject to separate approval during the county’s budget process.
The commission’s approval allows county staff to submit the application and related documents to ALDOT.
