Commission sets promotions and open-entry test dates: promotional exams Aug. 20, open-entry test Sept. 26

The commission moved to schedule promotional and open-entry examinations to fill multiple vacancies.

Mister Alden said he received a written request (07/08/2026) notifying the commission of Sergeant Prostners resignation effective July 14, 2026, which created a sergeant vacancy dated July 15, 2026. A courtesy eligibility review using that vacancy date found 10 corporals meet minimum qualifications to compete for promotion to sergeant; Chief Young and Commissioner Wilson independently verified the list. After discussing calendar availability, commissioners voted to hold the promotional examination for sergeant (and a related corporal exam) on Aug. 20 at 9:00 a.m. The multipurpose room will be used for testing and staff will notify eligible deputies once verification is final.

Commissioners also debated whether eligible candidates should continue to be required to submit a written letter of intent to test. They voted to stop requiring the return of that form and directed staff to notify eligible candidates individually. For two deputies who will be unavailable on the primary test date (one on military service and one on department training), commissioners directed staff to obtain military orders or a sheriffs letter and to arrange alternate testing dates or proctors as allowed by the rules; tentative makeup scheduling was discussed (e.g., Aug. 24 or the week following return).

Separately, Chief Gilman requested an open-entry exam to fill current vacancies. After considering advertising and hearing/strike procedures, the commission set an open-entry test for Sept. 26, 2026, and directed staff to refine the online application and add follow-up questions that will speed eligibility review.
