Solomon narrows water-project estimate, approves professional services agreement to pursue KWO funding

City public works staff reported progress Sept. 8 on a multiyear water infrastructure project, saying the total project cost estimate has been narrowed from $7.8 million to roughly $3.8 million and that staff are preparing plans for submission to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE).
Public Works Director Dan Britt said crews have completed valve exercises and are flushing and testing the system; lead-and-copper sampling must be completed before the end of September. He reported ongoing locates for water-main work and said the city is waiting for CES to deliver plans and specifications to KDHE as part of the permitting and funding process.
To support funding efforts, the council approved a professional services agreement with the North Central Regional Planning Commission (NCRPC) and two affidavits tied to a Kansas Water Office (KWO) application. The motion, made by Councilmember Kelley VanDeCreek and seconded by Shawn Kirby, passed 5-0.
Mayor Brandy Gray and councilmembers emphasized the importance of keeping the project moving and continuing documentation needed for potential grants. City staff said a town-hall meeting will be scheduled to brief residents on next steps once plans and funding options are more fully developed.
