Solomon accepts $46,869 grant for park restrooms and approves related park upgrades

The Solomon City Council on Sept. 8 accepted a $46,868.58 grant from the DK County Community Foundation to fund a complete renovation of the city park’s public restrooms and approved related park improvements.

Elizabeth Weese, representing the DK County Community Foundation, presented the grant check and said the foundation funds projects intended to improve Dickinson County’s quality of life. Kylie Hicken described a renovation plan for the bathrooms under the 'Wizard of Odz & Endz' project, saying the work will modernize fixtures and surfaces while retaining the existing building and will not rely on taxpayer dollars.

Council members also heard updates on other park enhancements. Council was told the sports-court fence has been installed, and organizers plan to fund eight benches through individual or organizational sponsorships. Public Works reported plans to use a mulch adhesive to stabilize areas around the court.

To improve safety and surveillance in the park, the council approved a camera purchase from Homman Electronics, with a motion by Councilmember Shawn Kirby and a second by Councilmember Brian Duryea; the motion passed 5-0. The cameras are proposed for the east end of the park and near the sports court.

The combined measures — donor-funded restroom renovation, the completed sports-court fence and added cameras — are intended to upgrade park amenities and public safety without drawing on the city's general fund. City staff said next steps include finalizing contractor plans and scheduling the work once contracts and materials are confirmed.
