Resident urges stewardship of St. Francis Educational Fund; board notes enrollment dip and schedules audit review

Jessica Matthies addressed the USD 297 Board of Education on Oct. 10 to discuss the current status of the St. Francis Educational Fund and to offer suggestions on spending priorities and ways to increase the fund balance. The board received the comment during the public comment portion of the agenda; no formal action on the fund was recorded.
Administration reported the district's official Sept. 20, 2024 FTE enrollment at 292, a decrease of nine students from the 2023–24 FTE figure of 301. The board also reviewed activity classification data from KSHSAA showing St. Francis as a Class 1A Division I school for 2024–25, with 96 students in grades 9–12.
The board reviewed the FY 2024 audit prepared by Adams & Brown, along with the accompanying management and governance letters; final approval of the audit was deferred to the Nov. 2024 meeting for further review. Superintendent Penka also said he will purchase a 1,000-gallon fuel tank for the bus garage; the minutes do not specify the funding source for that purchase.
The board scheduled its next regular meeting for Nov. 14, 2024 at 7:00 a.m.
