USD 297 board approves longevity bonuses for coaches, completes routine business

The USD 297 Board of Education on Oct. 10 approved one-time and ongoing longevity bonuses for coaches and carried several routine motions during its regular meeting at the district administrative office.
Bruce Swihart, Board of Education member, moved to give coaches who have coached 10 consecutive years a one-time bonus of $1,000 after the completion of the season and an additional $500 for every five years following the initial 10-year bonus. The motion was seconded by Chris Hingst and passed 4–0.
The board also approved its consent calendar, which included the minutes of the Sept. 12, 2024 meeting; payroll and claims on BANKWEST (checks numbering 12520–12532 and direct deposits 0919001–0919073) and First National Bank (checks 17773–17836); and cash summary and activity fund reports as of Sept. 30, 2024. The consent items reported a combined total of $367,729.11. The motion to approve the consent calendar was made by Chris Hingst, seconded by Dustin Andrist, and carried.
Superintendent Penka requested authorization to explore purchasing a new four-wheel-drive expedition vehicle for district use; Dustin Andrist moved to approve the request, Chris Hingst seconded, and the motion carried.
On district insurance, Superintendent Penka reported ongoing issues with the district's coverage through EMC Insurance and asked staff to complete an application with KICS Discovery Insurance through KSDE. Dustin Andrist moved that the superintendent complete the application; Bruce Swihart seconded and the motion carried.
The board recessed to an executive session to discuss personnel matters under K.S.A. 75-4319 after a motion by Dustin Andrist; the board returned to open session at 8:25 a.m. with no action taken.
The meeting adjourned at 9:28 a.m.; the next regular meeting is scheduled for Nov. 14, 2024 at 7:00 a.m.
