St. Francis Board approves personnel moves, stipend and handbook changes; national honor society to start

During its Aug. 22 meeting the St. Francis Board of Education approved several personnel and policy actions ranging from a new hire to temporary pay and handbook revisions.
Superintendent Mark Penka recommended hiring Kathy Korf as a high-school cook; the board approved the contract on a motion by Chris Hingst, seconded by Danielle McAtee. Penka also reported that Food Service Director will be out for several weeks for family health issues and requested a $350 stipend for the staff member who takes on daily bookkeeping; the board approved the stipend after a motion by Chris Hingst and second by Shawna Blanka. Penka said Justin Lohr’s last day with the district is Aug. 23, 2024, and the district remains in need of a Maintenance Director.
Principal Delbert Schmidt reviewed revisions to the junior-high/high-school student handbook—changes to cell-phone rules, tardy policy and eligibility requirements—which the board adopted immediately on a motion by Bruce Swihart, seconded by Danielle McAtee. Penka also said he will revise teacher leave rules to provide 10 sick days per year (capped at 30 total), remove the special three-day carve-out for staying home with sick children so those days fall under general sick leave, and convert two personal days plus one business day into three personal days per year; the minutes record Penka’s planned changes but do not show a recorded formal vote on sick-leave changes during this meeting.
The board additionally approved changes to bank signature cards for activity accounts and authorized the creation of a National Honor Society chapter with Morgan Sherlock as sponsor after a motion by Danielle McAtee and second by Bruce Swihart.
