Fourth-grade teacher urges clarity on instructional-coach openings as Greeneview Local board approves roof design contract and multiple personnel actions

A fourth-grade teacher asked the Greeneview Local School District board on July 16 for clarity about how the district will fill two recently vacated instructional-coach positions, and the board that night approved an architectural services agreement for roof work and several personnel hires and resignations before moving into executive session.

Sam Hook, a fourth-grade teacher in the district, told the board he was speaking about agenda item 6f and item 4a (teaching and learning), and asked when the district would post the open instructional-coach positions and what the plan is for filling them. “I know several staff, myself included, that are interested in these opportunities,” Hook said, adding that staff had not yet been informed of next steps after one coach moved to an assistant-principal role and another resigned.

Superintendent (speaking during the superintendent's updates) acknowledged the loss of an instructional coach and said the district would provide the staff with information: “That information will be forthcoming too,” the Superintendent said, adding that timing complicates hiring at this point in the summer but that the district is still “looking at that as well.”

On facilities, the board approved an agreement with Shore Architects Inc. for professional design services related to the elementary-school roof project; agenda language also permits the firm to assess middle-school roof needs while on site. The Superintendent told the board Shore will take core samples and coordinate with a local roofing contractor to identify and address repairs. Board members said the contract’s breadth was intended to give the district flexibility to address pressing elementary needs without having to return for separate permissions.

The board voted to approve routine finance and personnel items on the consent agenda. The treasurer’s items included approval of minutes from June 25, June financial reports, advances for the month ended June 30, approval of a $2,550 donation from the Greenview Athletic Boosters for coaches’ fees and free weights, and a then-and-now payment of $1,475 to Edmentum for a curriculum purchase after the vendor clarified the billing question. The board then approved multiple personnel actions, including one-year limited contracts for new teachers, supplemental coaching assignments, classified substitutes, recorded resignations/retirements (including an instructional coach resignation), a rescinded one-year limited contract for an evening custodian, an unpaid leave request, dock-day approvals and a staff step change. Items contingent on certification and background checks were noted in the personnel motions.

Board members also reported administrative staffing shifts and upcoming operational dates: staff orientation is scheduled for Aug. 12–13; staff start Aug. 17; students begin Aug. 19; CPI training is scheduled for Aug. 11; gym floors were scheduled to be redone July 21; and the district expects architects to start roof core sampling around July 22. The Superintendent said Dave Irvin, who started July 1 in facilities, has already begun addressing facilities needs and that technology and phone upgrades are underway.

After completing business the board moved into executive session to discuss personnel matters and stated that no new business would be conducted afterward.

What happens next: the Superintendent said the district will provide staff with information about the instructional-coach vacancies; the board will oversee the Shore Architects contract work and follow up on personnel items as contingent conditions (certification/background checks) are cleared.
