Stanton County USD 452 board authorizes $7,000 for door repairs, approves Scholar Bowl coach; playground ADA work to be scoped

President Lettie McKinney called the Stanton County Unified School District #452 Board of Education to order at 6:00 p.m. Oct. 14 in the SCHS Board Room. Trustees approved the evening’s agenda and the consent agenda, including the Sept. 16 minutes and payment of claims, each by 7-0 votes.
Superintendent Trenton Horn reviewed items scheduled for the meeting, noted statewide approval of Structured Literacy Training, and summarized awards programs the district uses to recognize staff and students. Principal Andrea Jones reported on elementary data visualizations shared on the district drive and gave updated after-school program enrollment figures.
The board discussed the SCES playground project after members raised concerns that existing playground equipment may not meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards. Board member Bobbie Ehrlich said the original equipment vendor is still in business and recommended the district contact that vendor; the board directed Superintendent Horn to gather more information and bring recommendations back to the board for next steps.
On facility security, the board approved a motion from Chantry Scott to seek a ballpark bid of about $7,000 from Alarm System to repair and adjust identified doors and to have Braxton weld the bottoms of a back door. Bobbie Ehrlich seconded; the motion passed 7-0, and the board authorized the work at the estimated cost.
The board entered a series of short executive sessions to discuss personnel matters with Superintendent Horn joining the board in the room for the stated intervals; each motion to go into executive session passed 7-0. After returning to open session, the board voted 7-0 to approve hiring James Hayes as both junior high and high school Scholar Bowl coach, following a motion by Val Zumudio and a second from Rhett Seyb.
In board comments, trustees discussed improving internal communication and campus upkeep; Bret Kendrick noted that the city recently passed an ordinance variance permitting fireworks to be discharged during football games.
The meeting adjourned at 7:16 p.m. after a 7-0 vote to close the session. The board did not record other formal policy adoptions or budget votes at this meeting.
