Wakefield fire chief seeks clarity on proposed fire hall; interlocal agreement tabled until January

Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department Chief Adam Ulrich asked the City Council for clarification on the city's position regarding a proposed fire hall, saying initial planning discussions began in March 2022 when different city officials represented the municipality and that since those officials left there has been no City representation at planning meetings. Council Member John Geiser attended a Dec. 8 planning meeting.
Chief Ulrich asked the council to include discussion of the future of the fire hall on the Jan. 7, 2026 council retreat agenda. Separately, City Attorney Luke Henderson asked the council to table consideration of an interlocal agreement with the Wakefield Rural Fire Board until the January meeting; he said the agreement is about 90% complete and pertains exclusively to administration and operations and does not cover property acquisition or construction, which would require a separate agreement.
No binding decisions on project construction or funding were taken at the Dec. 10 meeting; council members discussed potential bonding and the importance of public input. The matter will return to the January meeting when the interlocal agreement and the role of the city in planning are expected to be addressed further.
