Wakefield authorizes short-term electric contract with Northeast Power to bridge Jan–May 2027

Representatives from Northeast Power — Tracy Golden, Matt Sorenson and Mandy Baker — told the Wakefield City Council on Nov. 12 that the company proposed a five-month electric purchase agreement to serve Wakefield from January through May 2027. The short-term contract would bridge the City’s existing contract with BREC, which ends December 2026, and the City’s next anticipated supply arrangement tied to Tenaska beginning in June 2027.
City Attorney Henderson flagged two provisions dealing with generator operation; Northeast Power’s representatives confirmed those sections could be removed. Dave Peterson of JEO is preparing a rate study and will present scenarios for possible future rate adjustments.
Council Member Geiser moved to authorize the Mayor to sign the Northeast Power contract with the proposed modifications; Council Member Dolen seconded and the motion carried with unanimous aye votes from Brenn, Dolen, Geiser and Hansen.
The contract is intended to provide continuity of electric supply through May 2027 while staff and consultants finalize longer-term rate and supply arrangements.
