Wakefield council closes budget hearing after library urges earlier consultation on cuts

He opened two concurrent public hearings at 5:31 P.M.: one on the city's final tax request for fiscal 2025'2026 and one on the 2025'2026 budget.
Carol Clark, speaking on behalf of the Gardner Public Library, told the council the library had been subject to budget cuts and asked the council to "consider meeting with the library board earlier in the budget process to allow us to choose what categories need to be cut," a request intended to give the library input on prioritizing reductions.
Following public comment, Council Member Hansen moved to close both public hearings; Council Member Brenn seconded. The roll call vote was Brenn: aye, Dolen: aye, Geiser: absent, Hansen: aye. The motion to close the hearings carried at 5:34 P.M.
Council Member Hansen then moved to adjourn the budget hearing; Council Member Dolen seconded. The same members voted in favor (Brenn: aye, Dolen: aye, Geiser: absent, Hansen: aye) and the meeting adjourned at 5:35 P.M.
The record shows administrative staff present included Admin. Coordinator Decker and City Clerk Pam Vander Veen; City Administrator Mogus participated via Zoom from Lincoln. The minutes and certification language note the agenda was posted at least 24 hours before the meeting and minutes were available for public inspection per statutory requirements.
