Wakefield — The Wakefield City Council voted unanimously on Oct. 8 to approve a Core & Main proposal to upgrade the city’s radio‑read water meters with cloud‑based software and a tower antenna.
Will Ford, a meter specialist with Core & Main, told the council the new system would offer hourly data updates and allow staff to identify leaks more quickly. Installation costs were presented as approximately $104,000, with an annual support fee of about $22,000 beginning in the second year; Ford cautioned support fees are expected to rise by at least 3% annually. The council was told it may use $80,000 of remaining Water Treatment Plant SRF funds to cover part of the installation and that ongoing support costs will be charged to the electric and water funds.
Council Member Hansen moved to approve the Core & Main quote for the tower antenna and software; Council Member Brenn seconded. Brenn, Dolen, Geiser and Hansen voted aye.
The council did not adopt a separate multi‑year contract schedule during the meeting; staff will proceed with installation planning and incorporate the recurring support costs into future operating budgets.
