Wakefield — On Oct. 8, 2025, the Wakefield City Council unanimously adopted Resolution 122025 approving the city’s One- and Six-Year Street Plans after a public hearing in which Street Superintendent Jim Litchfield reviewed short‑ and long‑term projects.
Litchfield said short‑term work will focus on annual maintenance and asphalt seal coating, while longer‑term projects include reconstructing 14th Street with new curbs, gutters, storm drains and a concrete or asphalt surface. He also identified milling and overlay work and new drainage structures along Walnut Street between 4th and 6th Streets. Litchfield recommended the city establish a sinking fund to begin saving for future improvements and urged the council to commission an engineering study to refine cost estimates and project scope. He noted the listed costs are estimates and could change after engineering work.
Council members discussed formation of a paving district to finance the 14th Street work as one potential funding approach. After closing the public hearing, Council Member Geiser moved to adopt the One‑ and Six‑Year Street Plans; Council Member Dolen seconded and Brenn, Dolen, Geiser and Hansen voted aye.
The resolution directs staff to begin the next steps of planning and to return to council with engineering recommendations and potential financing options. No timeline or final construction authorization was adopted at the meeting; further study and formal project approvals will follow.
