Volunteers push forward $340,000 Fifer Creek restoration; county to assist access

Representatives of the George Grant Chapter of Trout Unlimited told commissioners they have largely completed permitting and design work for a Fifer Gulch restoration project and expect construction to begin this spring.
Alex Leone, president of the chapter, said the total project cost is about $340,000. "As volunteers writing grants, we've raised $205,000 on our own, and then the George Grant Chapter over four years is putting in the other $135,000," he said. The project was identified in a water study and confirmed by the Natural Resource Damage Program and State Fish, Wildlife, and Parks review, Leone said.
County staff said Glacier Excavating emerged as the best-qualified bidder at a little over $200,000 and that the county's Road Department would support creating a construction approach to save costs and improve access. The project requires CLOMR/LOMR mapping and FEMA review; county attorneys are reviewing the agreement and staff expected mobilization in March with completion planned by early summer.
GGTU said the restored reach is intended as a child-friendly fishing area and will avoid new parking or other heavy infrastructure; county assistance on access will reduce project costs.
