The Cairo Town Board on May 5 opened a public hearing on creating a South Cairo Water District intended to serve residents whose wells were contaminated by a malfunction at a thermostat plant.
Board members said the Village of Catskill has agreed to extend its water service to the area. The town will collect fees for the new district and re-levy as needed; officials reported the county is covering engineering costs for the project and expects to be reimbursed by the state. At the meeting the board stated that the town itself is not paying for the engineering portion of the work.
The board said the district will include the Country Estates neighborhood and will be implemented in two phases rather than by creating two separate districts. Officials also noted a ‘‘bloom’’ of contamination is persisting longer than expected, which is prolonging impacts to private wells.
No final formation vote was recorded at the meeting. The public hearing was closed and the board noted that another public hearing is scheduled in two weeks as part of the statutory process to create the district.
