Resident urges Dearborn Heights to rescue dog from condemned house

Bonnie Grimes told the Dearborn Heights City Council on July 14 that a neighbor’s house at 90 Cornell, which she said has been the site of drug activity and prostitution since the homeowner’s death last March, remains occupied only by a dog living without gas, electricity or water.
Grimes said she has shared video evidence and flash drives with local detectives and the police chief and that building officials placed a condemnation notice on the property. “We need this dog out of this house,” she said, adding that neighbors are ‘‘going crazy’’ over the animal’s condition.
Council members instructed Grimes to provide the address to the council secretary so staff could follow up. The presiding council chair said the city would refer the matter to ordinance enforcement and the police chief. A councilmember added, “I’m going to make sure to give you a callback tomorrow, and I’ll speak to the chief.”
Grimes said she had tried 911 but was disconnected and that an enforcement officer named Floyd visited and confirmed the dog’s presence. She asked the council what steps she should take to get help for the animal without exposing herself to liability if she forced entry.
The council did not take further public action at the meeting; members said staff would pursue complaints through ordinance enforcement and the police department and that the resident would receive a follow-up call.
The council’s public comment time limit was announced as two minutes; the matter was presented during the public comment portion of the meeting.
